It's not really about it being hard to insert the text into the game, but about translations needing to go through a lot of editing to be good or even serviceable. A translation is like a rough diamond you gotta polish up. Without it, it often lacks flow, context, consistency, character voices, any kind of flavor that makes for a nice to read experience etc. You could play it this way, but it probably wouldn't make for a great experience - especially in a game like this that's all about characters and story. You could play it this way, but it probably wouldn't make for a great experience - especially in a game like this that's all about characters and story. I've seen some folks that argue for translations that think they want super literacy tend to want the opposite. I think the poster boy example of a literal translation sucking the charm, nuance, and character out of a translation need look no further than RPGOne and Skyrender's work on Final Fantasy VI.It was like they translated the text word for word as-is in it's Japanese format, made it so the sentence structure flowed well in English and called it a day without doing a secondary pass for flow and readability.

The dialog comes across as very stiff and robotic. The characters have no personality to them. It ultimately comes as across as rather bland.As result I would never criticize the work Ted Woolsey had to deal with considering the minimal support and stringent deadline of localizing FF6 basically all on his own.In the case of Ys, this is another good reason why Xseed is prefered over NISA. For Xseed they take their work seriously and treat it like a passion project. I have not seen the same sort of consideration gone into the work NISA does, and I don't say this lightly considering I am a huge Disgaea fan.

The Zero effort's taken about a year and a half or just under so far. Ao would end up longer because of many more terminology checks due to how much more interconnected that entry is with both Trails in the Sky and the Cold Steel series following later.Anyway, it's great to hear the raw script's done. It's sadly gonna be a while before we'll have a good edit and patch to make use of it, but Ao in English is a dream come true. I just hope it comes quick enough before XSEED has to release Cold Steel III.
