Mercedes W123 Manual Gearbox Problems
Seeing as how the gas my WRX uses just went up to 3.33/gal here in SD, the thought had crossed my mind to try an oil burner I could make my own fuel for. I know cars well, and have rebuilt a few gas engines. However, I know crap-all about diesel other than what I've read in my autoshop textbook. I've read that some came with a four speed manual while most of them came equipped with the automatic transmission that was very problematic and complex due to the vacuum control parts.

At the risk of upsetting the 'only use MB transmission fluid' brigade - any Dexron II or III fluid will do the job, however I suspect that it won't cure the problem and a new or recon gearbox will probably be in order.Not sure how mobile you are but it may be worth asking Andy Gayle (Birmingham) to have a look at your carthere's a very 'unscientific test for auto gearboxes that goes something like this. I'll say now that i take no responsibility for any possible damage to your car, gearbox or property if this goes wrong1, with the engine at operating temp and running put the brakes on and engage first gear and floor the throttle2, if the revs stick at about 2000 then all is well3, if the revs only rise to about half of that then suspect stator slip in the torque convertor4, if it rises above 2500 then suspect clutch or brake band slip in the gearboxDo not run this test for more than 10 seconds or on a car that is not fully warmed upAndy.
